Pokeweed – We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Plunger! Review

March 24, 2011

Here’s a little review of my good friend Drew Pocza’s Pokeweed comic “We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Plunger”. It’s a collection of the first 200 comic strips of small town Pokeweed, just south of nowhere.

The first thing that struck me was the title! Love the play on words from Jaws, and if you’re new to PW you’ll notice Drew loves wordplay, so very fitting. It also sums up the kind of humour to expect!

The cover has a great layout, full colour introducing the main players in our PW world. Loving the textures and the Pokeweed font is perfect.

Opening the book, the first thing you come to (after the giant plunger and title) are some concept designs for the characters. I’m a huge fan of seeing the process of people’s work and would loved to see more of these (but I know if working digitally, it’s not really something you think about too much…). I find it fascinating to see how the artist came to the final design and the growth in the artwork.

There’s a nice intro to each character and it’s good to see the continuity in the design with the dotted lines throughout.

For those like me who are familiar with PW, it’s awesome to see the very first strips, and to see how the style and artwork has changed. Also love the fact the first strip is the sign of things to come in terms of the humour.  The one consistency that I love throughout the PW strips is the strong line style. Each stroke is drawn and not copied and pasted (something I’m now trying to emulate).

There are some gems to be found of strips I missed or even revisiting ones I’d forgotten about. The genius thing about PW is that ones that didn’t really hit the spot at the time are brilliant on second reading. It’s just non-stop Pokeweed magic.

There’s a great mix of one off strips and continuous storylines which keep you guessing and keep you coming back for more.

One thing I was never a huge fan of when first introduced was the new character of Chuck (around strip 100). He’s an “ex-monster’ trying to make a new life for himself in PW. I must have been insane the first time round, because on second reading, he’s an awesome character that adds so much to PW.

I find I’m torn sometimes with the PW artwork, in terms of backgrounds. At times I want to see more of the town and backdrops, but on the other hand I love the clean linework that focuses on the characters, so in my humble opinion, a nice mix would be my ideal.

This book is absolutely brilliant. Non stop PW and the only main critisism with it would be that we miss out on the coloured strips. I love the B&W but now and again the colour ones just add something special and I understand the reasons with the printing etc, so I urge you to go to the website and hunt them down!!

At the end of the book is some fanart by some amazing artists, themselves doing awesome comics, so take note and have a look. This is then followed by a nice outro from the man himself, Drew Pocza. Nice to see where he came from and how we’ve now got the awesomeness that is Pokeweed.

All in all I think this is a must buy for all PW and non PW regulars alike. Some great artwork and fun stuff. Look forward to the next 200 strips!!

This awesome book is available in all it’s glory in hard copy book form, or if like me you can’t wait that long, then this bad boy is available as a pdf download at a fraction of the price. Go buy it here.

New #Sketchcards and #Etsy

March 14, 2011

Greetings. I’ve been having loads of fun with the old markers again recently and thought I should try and get some sketchcards done. Wanted to take the theme of old TV cartoons (that I used to watch – with the Toy Story exception) and so this is what I came up with.

I also decided that I might as well open an Etsy show and try to peddle my wears, so please take a look around and see if you fancy anything.

thanks
