Parcel Full of Goodies

June 21, 2011

Received a parcel through the post this morning that I was kinda expecting…to a point.

My wife bought me a t-shirt from here and due to postal issues it was slightly delayed…the wait was TOTALLY worth it!!

The envelope was just the start of things to come:

The T-shirt I (and when I say “I” I obviously mean the missus) ordered is AWESOME!! Great quality shirt and the print just looks (to overuse the word) awesome.

But that wasn’t all! Look what else fell out that envelope of wonders!!

Anyone who follows this blog regularly will know how much I love Pokeweed so to have ALL of this in one envelope was like Christmas!!!!!

BUT that wasn’t all, oh no!!! AND THIS JUST MADE MY YEAR!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Drew Pocza – MY HERO!!

Influences Part 04 – Dani Jones

Dani Jones it has to be said is one of the most inspiring people I know (via the internet)! She makes me want to go and draw and create stuff!!

When I first started getting back into art, somehow I stumbled across Dani and found she was doing a show on Ustream where she’d paint and you could watch and ask questions and talk to her and others in “the room”. I learned so much!! She then set up The Artcast Network, to find other artists who stream live. I found so many more awesome artists because of it!

Being a versatile artist she delved into the world of comics and produced My Sister the Freak. Is there any limit to her abilities??

Take a look at some of her work:

Not only does she plug her own work but she is someone who goes all out to help other artists and so she set up The Illustrated Section. THIS IS AMAZING!! It’s a website where other artists can upload comics or books they’ve produced for people to buy or download for FREE. GO AND HAVE A LOOK IT’S AWESOME!!

I have a lot to thank Dani Jones for and so…THANK YOU!!!

I have to say this week has been fun to share my influences with you and there are so many other awesome people I owe a lot to and so an honourable mention to:

Drew Pocza – Creator of Pokeweed
Josh Alves – Creator of Heropotamus
Mike Haihack – Creator of Cleopatra in Spaaaace!
Katie Cook – Creator of Gronk

Pokeweed – We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Plunger! Review

March 24, 2011

Here’s a little review of my good friend Drew Pocza’s Pokeweed comic “We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Plunger”. It’s a collection of the first 200 comic strips of small town Pokeweed, just south of nowhere.

The first thing that struck me was the title! Love the play on words from Jaws, and if you’re new to PW you’ll notice Drew loves wordplay, so very fitting. It also sums up the kind of humour to expect!

The cover has a great layout, full colour introducing the main players in our PW world. Loving the textures and the Pokeweed font is perfect.

Opening the book, the first thing you come to (after the giant plunger and title) are some concept designs for the characters. I’m a huge fan of seeing the process of people’s work and would loved to see more of these (but I know if working digitally, it’s not really something you think about too much…). I find it fascinating to see how the artist came to the final design and the growth in the artwork.

There’s a nice intro to each character and it’s good to see the continuity in the design with the dotted lines throughout.

For those like me who are familiar with PW, it’s awesome to see the very first strips, and to see how the style and artwork has changed. Also love the fact the first strip is the sign of things to come in terms of the humour.  The one consistency that I love throughout the PW strips is the strong line style. Each stroke is drawn and not copied and pasted (something I’m now trying to emulate).

There are some gems to be found of strips I missed or even revisiting ones I’d forgotten about. The genius thing about PW is that ones that didn’t really hit the spot at the time are brilliant on second reading. It’s just non-stop Pokeweed magic.

There’s a great mix of one off strips and continuous storylines which keep you guessing and keep you coming back for more.

One thing I was never a huge fan of when first introduced was the new character of Chuck (around strip 100). He’s an “ex-monster’ trying to make a new life for himself in PW. I must have been insane the first time round, because on second reading, he’s an awesome character that adds so much to PW.

I find I’m torn sometimes with the PW artwork, in terms of backgrounds. At times I want to see more of the town and backdrops, but on the other hand I love the clean linework that focuses on the characters, so in my humble opinion, a nice mix would be my ideal.

This book is absolutely brilliant. Non stop PW and the only main critisism with it would be that we miss out on the coloured strips. I love the B&W but now and again the colour ones just add something special and I understand the reasons with the printing etc, so I urge you to go to the website and hunt them down!!

At the end of the book is some fanart by some amazing artists, themselves doing awesome comics, so take note and have a look. This is then followed by a nice outro from the man himself, Drew Pocza. Nice to see where he came from and how we’ve now got the awesomeness that is Pokeweed.

All in all I think this is a must buy for all PW and non PW regulars alike. Some great artwork and fun stuff. Look forward to the next 200 strips!!

This awesome book is available in all it’s glory in hard copy book form, or if like me you can’t wait that long, then this bad boy is available as a pdf download at a fraction of the price. Go buy it here.

Have been having too much fun with the markers recently, and those that have been following my webcomic The Monkey and the Mouse, will know I’ve been whinging about only have 8 markers. Well I thought I’d try and push those 8 markers and produce something a bit special.

Well I think I’m slowly getting there. Here’s a piece of fanart for one of my favourite webcomics by my good friend Drew Pocza: Pokeweed

New 1 a day Star Wars Caricatures #Win

July 26, 2010

I’m starting a new 1 a day illustration for this week. Star Wars head caricatures.

It was suggested I have a crack at Star Wars by Mr Drew Pocza a while back and it sparked something, but it wasn’t until I saw Eric Merced’s Chibi Star Wars pics that I was inspired and ready to go, so thanks guys!

I decided to draw each on lightweight card 3″x4″. Drawn with graphite pencil and coloured pencils. Inked with Unipin.

I’ve also decided to give them away each day. “How do I get my mitts on these bad boys?” I hear you asking. All you need to do is comment below and I’ll randomly select the winner at the end of the day (23:00 GMT). You can only win 1 piece during the week.

Day 1 – Biker Scout

Hope you like and good luck
